Victim Thwarts Kidnapping Attempt with SOS Note in Utah
A quick-thinking woman successfully thwarted a kidnapping attempt at a gas station in southern Utah by discreetly passing an SOS note to a witness. This incident resulted in the apprehension of the alleged perpetrator, Epigmenio Bustillos Marquez, 53.
Details of the Incident
According to reports from the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, the dramatic events unfolded around 1:30 p.m. on March 8 at the Cedar Band Travel Plaza, located approximately seven miles southwest of Cedar City.
Emergency Alert
The victim managed to slip a handwritten note to a bystander, indicating that she was in distress and required assistance. The witness observed the victim entering a white Chevrolet Equinox with Nevada license plates before deciding to follow the vehicle onto Interstate 15, where they reported their concerns to law enforcement.
Law Enforcement Response
Deputies were dispatched quickly to the reported location, where they conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in question. Upon questioning, the victim appeared to be acting unusually, prompting further investigation.
The driver, Marquez, presented a false identity card from Durango, Mexico, creating further suspicion among deputies.
Background and Relationship Dynamics
Investigation revealed that the victim and Marquez had been in a long-term relationship spanning 25 years. However, the victim noted a significant change in Marquez’s behavior, describing him as increasingly erratic. On the day of the incident, instead of driving her to work as she had requested, Marquez allegedly threatened to take her away to Salt Lake City or Denver, intensifying her fears for her safety.
Allegations of Abuse
According to the victim’s report, Marquez threatened her life should she attempt to escape while he was driving at high speeds. Additionally, during the course of the incident, he confiscated her phone and physically assaulted her, further compounding the situation.
Legal Consequences
Marquez was taken into custody and booked at the Iron County Correctional Facility. He faces a charge of aggravated assault, classified as a first-degree felony, along with several misdemeanor charges, including providing false information and interference with a communication device. Currently, Marquez has been ordered to remain in custody without bail while awaiting a pretrial hearing.
