‘Boop! The Musical’ to Conclude Broadway Run on July 13

by NY Review Contributor

After a brief yet vibrant stint on Broadway, Boop! The Musical is set to play its final performance at the Broadhurst Theatre on July 13, 2025. The production, inspired by the iconic 1930s cartoon character Betty Boop, will conclude after 25 preview performances and 112 regular shows.

Boop! The Musical reimagines Betty Boop’s journey, transporting her from her black-and-white animated world into the bustling, colorful streets of contemporary New York City. There, she embarks on an adventure of self-discovery, navigating fame, love, and identity. The musical features music by Grammy Award-winning composer David Foster, lyrics by Tony nominee Susan Birkenhead, and a book by Tony Award winner Bob Martin. Direction and choreography were helmed by Tony Award-winning director Jerry Mitchell.

Leading the cast, Jasmine Amy Rogers delivered a standout performance as Betty Boop, earning her a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Her portrayal also garnered her a Drama Desk Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Theatre World Award.

Despite these accolades, Boop! faced challenges in sustaining audience interest. The show’s attempt to revive a nearly century-old character for modern audiences met with mixed reviews. While some praised its choreography and visual appeal, others felt the storyline lacked depth and contemporary relevance.

At the 2025 Tony Awards, Boop! received three nominations: Best Leading Actress in a Musical (Jasmine Amy Rogers), Best Choreography (Jerry Mitchell), and Best Costume Design of a Musical (Gregg Barnes). However, the production did not secure any wins.

Adding to its challenges, Boop! was notably absent from the televised performances during the Tony Awards ceremony. Despite offers from both Boop! and fellow nominee Smash to cover the $300,000 performance fee, producers declined their participation, a decision that sparked controversy within the theater community.

A Broader Trend of Post-Tony Closures

Boop! is the fourth Broadway production to announce its closure following the Tony Awards, joining Smash, Real Women Have Curves, and Dead Outlaw. This trend highlights the competitive nature of Broadway and the significant impact that awards recognition—or the lack thereof—can have on a show’s longevity.

Legacy and Final Performances

While Boop! may not have achieved long-term commercial success, its creative ambition and the performances of its cast, particularly Jasmine Amy Rogers, left a lasting impression. The musical’s exploration of a classic character through a modern lens offered audiences a unique theatrical experience.

Tickets for the remaining performances are available through Telecharge and the Broadhurst Theatre box office. The production also offers digital rush tickets and special pricing for theatergoers under 30.
