On Earth Day, New York City officially launched its citywide composting program, aiming to reduce landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions. The program includes curbside pickup for organic waste and free compost bins for residents.

“This is a major step toward making NYC the greenest city in the world,” said Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Officials estimate the program could divert over one million tons of waste from landfills annually.
