During a second-quarter earnings call, Costco’s Chief Financial Officer, Gary Millerchip, revealed exciting additions to the food court menu. The first notable introduction is a strawberry banana smoothie, which became available to customers at the beginning of March. This new item aims to provide a refreshing beverage option to complement the existing menu.

In addition, Costco plans to reintroduce the popular turkey provolone sandwich in the third quarter of the year. This hot sandwich, which had been missing from the menu for several years, is expected to be a well-received comeback among loyal customers.

Changes in Beverage Offerings

In a significant shift, Costco announced its decision to revert its food court beverage offerings back to Coca-Cola products, with the transition scheduled for this summer. CEO Ron Vachris highlighted this change during the company’s January shareholders meeting, noting that Costco has been serving Pepsi products since 2013. This move marks a notable return to Coca-Cola, which has been a long-standing partner for Costco.

Performance and Impact of Food Courts

According to Millerchip, the food courts, along with the pharmacy services, significantly contributed to Costco’s ancillary business revenue in the second quarter. This broadened service portfolio, which includes gas stations, optical departments, hearing aids, and tire installations, encourages members to visit more frequently. For the fiscal year 2024, Costco reported selling an impressive 229 million hot dog and soda combos globally, reflecting the popularity and success of their food court strategy.

Costco’s Global Expansion

Amid these culinary updates, Costco continues to expand its presence worldwide. The company reached a total of 900 warehouse locations globally, with 620 of those in the United States. Recent expansions include a new warehouse opened in Sharon, Massachusetts, earlier in March. As of the end of the second quarter, Costco boasted approximately 140.6 million membership cardholders, underscoring the organization’s robust growth trajectory.
