Real ID Deadline Approaching: What You Need to Know

NEW YORK – As the deadline for obtaining a REAL ID draws near, travelers across the United States are urged to prepare. Beginning May 7, 2025, individuals will require a REAL ID, Enhanced ID, or a valid passport to board domestic flights or enter secured federal facilities.

DMV Preparations for Increased Demand

In response to the rising demand for REAL IDs, the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is implementing extended hours. Select DMV locations will open their doors on Saturdays, starting April 5, to help alleviate the pressure. These extended hours will be available from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with one of the locations being in Garden City, Nassau County.

Current Booking Challenges

Despite these efforts, many DMV appointment slots across New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County are already filled through June. The effectiveness of the Saturday openings in addressing the unprecedented demand remains uncertain.

Important Requirements and Documentation

To obtain a REAL ID, applicants must provide several key documents, including:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of legal presence in the U.S.
  • Proof of New York state residency
  • Your Social Security number

Alternative Options for Travelers

Notably, individuals with a valid passport are exempt from the REAL ID requirement. “If you have a passport, you’re fine. That’s a strong, valid credential. And you can use that,” stated Robert Sinclair Jr., Senior Manager of Public Affairs at AAA Northeast. For those who prefer not to use a passport for air travel, a REAL ID is essential.

The Origin of the Real ID Act

The REAL ID Act was enacted in 2005 as a security measure following the September 11 attacks. While the deadline for compliance has been postponed several times, the current cutoff date is set for May 7, 2025. “You have to remember this goes back to 2005,” noted Sinclair, highlighting the prolonged timeline for the implementation of these rigorous ID standards.

Next Steps for Travelers

Travelers are encouraged to act quickly if they do not possess a passport or REAL ID. With appointments in high demand, your options may become limited as the deadline approaches. To optimize your chances of securing an appointment, check the DMV website frequently and start gathering the necessary documentation without delay.
