The 2025 Capital Concert Series commenced on July 9 at Albany’s Empire State Plaza, featuring a dynamic performance by hip-hop pioneer Doug E. Fresh. Known as the “Original Human Beatbox,” Fresh’s appearance marked the beginning of the annual free summer concert series, drawing a diverse crowd eager to experience live music in the heart of New York’s capital.
The evening’s lineup celebrated the rich history and evolution of hip-hop. Doug E. Fresh, whose career spans nearly four decades, captivated the audience with his signature beatboxing and classic hits. His influence on the genre is profound, having introduced vocal percussion to mainstream audiences and setting a precedent for future artists.
Joining Fresh were the renowned duo Nice & Smooth, consisting of Greg Nice and Smooth B. Their performance included fan favorites like “Sometimes I Rhyme Slow,” showcasing their unique blend of lyrical prowess and melodic hooks that have left a lasting impact on East Coast hip-hop.
Emerging artist Suzi also took the stage, delivering a set that fused elements of pop, R&B, and hip-hop. Her performance highlighted her versatility and the genre’s ongoing evolution, resonating with both longtime fans and new listeners.
The event also featured the 518 DJ Battle, a competition spotlighting local DJs from the Capital Region. Hosted by DJ Show and DJ Biz, the battle provided a platform for regional talent to showcase their skills, further emphasizing the series’ commitment to community engagement and support for local artists.
Organized by the New York State Office of General Services (OGS), the Capital Concert Series aims to provide accessible cultural experiences to the public. OGS Commissioner Jeanette Moy emphasized the series’ role in fostering community spirit and offering residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy high-quality performances in a communal setting.
The concert series is part of the broader “Summer at the Plaza” initiative, which includes various events designed to enliven the Empire State Plaza and promote cultural enrichment throughout the summer months.

- July 23: Lit with Plush
- August 6: Tarrus Riley and Blak Soil Band with The Meditations
Each concert is scheduled from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, offering attendees a range of musical genres and performances to enjoy.
