Sun Country Flight Diverted After Security Concern Revealed as Child’s Hoax
EL PASO, Texas (FOX 9) – A recent incident involving a Sun Country Airlines flight has highlighted the delicate nature of security concerns in air travel. What initially seemed like a serious threat was later discovered to be a misunderstanding involving young children.
Incident Overview
On Wednesday, a Sun Country flight, designated as Flight 593, was traveling from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to Mazatlán, Mexico. The flight was unexpectedly diverted to El Paso, Texas, after crew members were alerted about a potentially threatening note found aboard the aircraft.
Content of the Note
The note, which read “You Are All Going to Die, Help Me,” prompted immediate action from both passengers and crew. Upon receiving the alert, the flight crew promptly reported the situation to law enforcement, leading to the diversion of the plane.
Investigation Findings
FBI Special Agent in Charge John Morales provided a clarifying update, stating that the investigation revealed there was no real threat to any passengers or crew members on board. Interviews with individuals involved indicated that the note had been crafted by two young children during the flight.
Subsequently, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas announced that they would not pursue federal charges related to the incident.
Response from Sun Country Airlines
Sun Country issued a statement confirming the diversion and reassured the public that the aircraft landed safely, without any incident. Following the landing, the airline provided accommodations for the affected passengers overnight, and no injuries were reported.
FBI’s Initial Response
Upon learning of the diverted flight, the FBI in El Paso quickly mobilized to assist the El Paso International Airport and ensure the safety of all passengers and crew members aboard the airline.
