A Peoria family is heartbroken following the tragic death of their dog, Chiquilin, commonly known as Chiqui. The pet was brutally beaten to death by a neighbor, a distressing event captured on video.

The Incident

On a recent Friday afternoon, the family learned that Chiqui had escaped from their yard. A neighbor informed them that another individual was recorded attacking their dog with a shovel. The family rushed to the scene, only to find Chiqui fatally injured on the ground.

“When we woke up this morning, you just felt the sadness,” said Brianna Camacho, a member of the family. “She was like, ‘yeah, he just threw him over the fence,’” she recalled, recounting the call from their neighbor.

Due to the severe nature of Chiqui’s injuries, the family had no choice but to say goodbye that evening.

A Beloved Family Member

Chiqui was not just a pet; he was a significant part of the family. “He protected us. If anybody came, he was there to protect and also a really good family member,” Isaac Cuniga, the dog’s owner, shared, emphasizing the loyalty and affection that Chiqui offered.

“Chiquilin was a good dog. He was the sweetest,” added Brianna, highlighting the deep emotional impact of their loss.

Seeking Justice

The family is not only grieving for their lost companion but is also demanding accountability. They expressed frustration that the neighbor responsible for the attack has not yet been arrested and raised concerns about the safety of other pets and children in the neighborhood.

“People never even imagine that people have the heart to do that,” Brianna remarked, illustrating the shock and anger that the incident has sparked within the community.

According to Peoria Police, the neighbor involved in the incident has claimed self-defense, saying that Chiqui posed a threat to his own pets. However, investigators noted that video footage presents a very different narrative. As the case unfolds, animal cruelty charges are pending against the responsible party.

This unsettling incident has left the family concerned for the safety of their other dogs and their young child. “What if a kid accidentally throws a ball over or something? If he did that to a dog, what would he do to a kid?” Isaac pondered aloud, reflecting the anxious climate in the community.
