Governors Island transformed into a time capsule on August 17, 2024, as the annual Jazz Age Lawn Party kicked off with thousands of attendees dressed in vintage 1920s attire. Guests, donning flapper dresses, feathered headbands, bowler hats, and suspenders, reveled in the glamour of the Roaring ’20s while enjoying live jazz music, dance lessons, and period-appropriate cocktails.
“This event is like stepping into a time machine,” said founder Michael Arenella, who also leads his Dreamland Orchestra in performances throughout the two-day festival. Attendees of all ages danced to swing and jazz classics, played lawn games, and shopped at vintage vendors offering everything from antique jewelry to Art Deco décor.
In addition to music and fashion, the Jazz Age Lawn Party celebrates the social and cultural movements of the era, blending entertainment with historical appreciation. Dance instructors hosted Charleston workshops, while mixologists recreated Prohibition-era cocktails to transport guests back in time.
As one of NYC’s most cherished summer traditions, the Jazz Age Lawn Party offers more than just nostalgia—it serves as a reminder of the timeless joy of community and creativity. With its picturesque setting and vibrant atmosphere, the event remains a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar.
