Centenarian Bowler Joe Alvarez Continues to Inspire at Dublin Bowl
Dublin, California – At the remarkable age of 100, Joe Alvarez remains a vibrant figure at Dublin Bowl, exemplifying that age is just a number.
A Life Full of Passion
Born on January 6, 1925, in Danville, California, Alvarez has embraced an active lifestyle, showcasing his vitality at the bowling alley where he regularly participates in leagues three days a week. Starting to bowl at the age of 40, he has maintained a consistent performance, boasting an average score of 140 in games.
A Birthday to Remember
Celebrating his recent birthday at Dublin Bowl, Alvarez was greeted with applause and high fives from friends and fellow bowlers. “It’s good to be 100,” he remarked, taking in the warm atmosphere filled with birthday cake and well-wishes.
Upon reflecting on life, Alvarez stated, “I feel fine….I think. I just wake up. It’s just another day.”
Remaining Active
Alvarez not only excels in bowling but also maintains a rigorous workout routine. He emphasizes health through his diet, which includes plenty of cottage cheese and fish. He shared, “Lately I do 15 push-ups. They’re kind of half push-ups really; I don’t go all the way to the floor.” His dedication to fitness is evident, as even at this age, he continues to drive and recently renewed his driver’s license, much to the amazement of others.
A Journey Through History
Alvarez’s life story is as inspiring as his achievements in bowling. He grew up in a Texas orphanage during the 1920s and enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17, serving aboard the USS St. Louis during a tumultuous period in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
He recalls, “Being under fire and sitting at your battle station… it’s kind of a weird feeling. Suddenly you become very religious.”
Legacy and Family
Having outlived three wives, Alvarez is a proud father of two daughters, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He retired after a successful 23-year career in the Navy, subsequently working as an insurance adjuster in the East Bay.
Reflecting on longevity, Alvarez advises, “If you want to live a full life, find your passion and run with it.” His story embodies not just a love for bowling but also an indomitable spirit that continues to inspire those around him.
