Waterbury Man Escapes 20-Year Captivity by Setting Fire to Home
Location: Waterbury, Connecticut
A 32-year-old man recently made a harrowing escape from what authorities describe as a two-decade-long captivity in Waterbury, Connecticut. The man allegedly set fire to his home last month in a desperate bid for freedom, according to police reports.
Details of the Incident
On February 17, emergency services responded to a report of a fire at a residence on Blake Street. Fire officials and local police discovered two individuals inside the burning building: the man and his stepmother, identified as 56-year-old Kimberly Sullivan.
While Sullivan managed to exit the home unscathed, her stepson required medical attention after suffering from smoke inhalation and the effects of exposure to the flames.
Allegations of Captivity
During the investigation, the man’s claims came to light. He informed law enforcement that he had intentionally started the fire in an upstairs room, expressing, “I wanted my freedom.” The investigation, in collaboration with the Waterbury State’s Attorney’s Office, revealed that he had been held captive since the age of 11.
Investigation Findings
Authorities reported that the man had experienced significant abuse over the years, including severe neglect and prolonged starvation. Investigators found him in a dire state, severely malnourished and lacking any form of medical or dental care during his captivity.
The findings indicated that he had been given only minimal food and water, leading to his critical physical condition.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
As a result of the investigation, a warrant was issued for Sullivan’s arrest, and she was taken into custody on February 21. She faces multiple charges, including first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, and first-degree unlawful restraint.
Sullivan appeared in court where her bond was set at $300,000. Following the arraignment, she was remanded to the custody of the Connecticut Department of Corrections.

Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo commented on the case, stating, “The suffering this victim endured for over 20 years is both heartbreaking and unimaginable.
