New York City’s first large-scale urban vertical farm officially opened today in a state-of-the-art facility in East Harlem. The farm, built in partnership with local nonprofits and private investors, is expected to produce over 2 million pounds of fresh produce annually.
The indoor farm uses cutting-edge hydroponic and LED technology to grow vegetables and herbs in stacked layers, reducing land use and water consumption. “This is the future of sustainable agriculture,” said founder Elena Martinez. “We’re feeding our community while preserving our planet.”
The produce will be sold locally, with a portion donated to food banks and schools. Community leaders see the farm as a model for addressing food deserts in urban areas.
