MoMA Opens Exhibit on Women in Abstract Expressionism

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) opened a landmark exhibit on October 10, 2024, titled Women of Abstract Expressionism: Breaking Barriers. The exhibit shines a spotlight on the overlooked contributions of female artists to the Abstract Expressionist movement of the mid-20th century.
“This exhibit reclaims the narratives of women whose work helped shape one of the most significant movements in art history,” said MoMA Director Glenn Lowry. The collection features over 100 works by artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Elaine de Kooning, alongside lesser-known pioneers like Grace Hartigan and Perle Fine.
Visitors praised the exhibit for its immersive curation, which includes large-scale paintings, personal letters, and archival footage. Special programming, including artist talks, workshops, and panel discussions, will explore the cultural and historical context of these groundbreaking artists’ work.
Women of Abstract Expressionism has been widely celebrated as an overdue recognition of the role women played in redefining modern art. The exhibit will run through February 2025, providing an opportunity for visitors to experience the dynamic creativity of these trailblazing artists.
