Traffic Disruption in New Jersey Due to Sinkholes
NEW JERSEY – Authorities in New Jersey are actively addressing a series of sinkholes impacting major thoroughfares in Morris County, specifically along I-80 and Route 287. These sinkholes have resulted in extensive traffic diversions and inconvenienced local businesses.
Current Situation on I-80
A sizable 15-by-15-foot sinkhole has led to the indefinite closure of the westbound lanes of I-80 at Exit 34 in Wharton. Motorists traveling both directions on Route 80 near this exit will face closures as state crews undertake necessary repairs, largely attributed to deteriorating conditions from abandoned mines in the area.
Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, along with Governor Phil Murphy and Congressman Thomas Kean, recently visited the affected site to receive updates on the ongoing repair work. Governor Murphy urged those who can work from home to do so, stating, “Please work from home for the next 6 to 8 weeks if that’s an option for you to relieve some of the pressure.”
Anticipated Repair Timeline
While repairs on the westbound lanes are expected to be completed within the week, the eastbound lanes are projected to remain closed for a more extended period, likely around six to eight weeks. “This is a massive artery that can’t be shut down,” emphasized Duffy, reinforcing the collaborative efforts at both state and federal levels to resolve the issue. Plans to assess federal assistance for repair efforts are also underway.
Adjustment for Commuters
In response to the situation, NJ Transit announced a 50% discount on fares for the Morris & Essex Line starting Monday, aiming to encourage commuters to opt for public transportation and reduce road traffic.

Another significant sinkhole has emerged on Route 80, following a collapsed pipe, which has led to the closure of three leftmost lanes on the northbound side just north of Exit 41B in Parsippany-Troy Hills. Delays are anticipated to continue as repair work is actively underway.
