by NY Review Contributor

New York City, December 2022 – As the holiday season took hold, New York City once again became a glittering wonderland, drawing millions of visitors from around the globe to experience its world-renowned holiday displays. The city’s iconic landmarks were adorned with breathtaking light installations, offering an unforgettable celebration of the season. From the towering Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center to the dazzling lights along Fifth Avenue, New York City’s festive spirit was brighter than ever this December.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree: A Majestic Tradition

One of the crown jewels of the city’s holiday festivities is undoubtedly the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, which, this year, stood taller and brighter than ever before. The 82-foot Norway Spruce, adorned with over 50,000 LED lights, attracted throngs of visitors eager to snap photos and take in the sheer grandeur of the display. The tree’s lighting ceremony, held in late November, marked the official start of the city’s holiday season and brought together celebrities, local dignitaries, and thousands of spectators.

“It’s a tradition we look forward to every year,” said Karen Miller, a local New Yorker who attended the tree lighting ceremony. “The magic of the lights and the atmosphere really makes you feel the joy of the holidays. There’s nothing like it.”

In addition to the tree, the nearby ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center remained a popular attraction, offering both locals and tourists the chance to glide beneath the tree’s twinkling lights.

Fifth Avenue Shines Bright with Iconic Window Displays and Lights

Just a short walk from Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue was transformed into a holiday spectacle, showcasing its legendary window displays at department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s. Each year, the storefronts are adorned with creative, elaborate designs, drawing both fashion lovers and families eager to take in the intricate holiday-themed showcases.

This year’s display at Saks featured a dazzling light show, where synchronized music and colorful illuminations lit up the store’s facade, captivating passersby. Meanwhile, Macy’s put on an enchanting series of windows that told the story of “The Nutcracker,” bringing the classic holiday tale to life with enchanting figurines and intricate designs.

The streets themselves were equally spectacular, with massive, twinkling lights and festive decorations illuminating the busy avenue. The decorations stretched from the iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral to the New York Public Library, offering an incredible, immersive holiday experience.

“It’s always a thrill to walk down Fifth Avenue during the holidays,” said Alex Thompson, a visitor from Chicago. “The lights, the windows, everything just exudes Christmas spirit.”

Holiday Markets: Festive Shopping and Entertainment

New York City’s holiday markets also drew enormous crowds this year, offering a delightful blend of unique gifts, delicious food, and live performances. The Bryant Park Winter Village, a popular destination for both locals and tourists, featured dozens of charming booths selling handmade jewelry, artisanal goods, and warm winter treats.

“We come every year to pick up unique gifts and enjoy the hot chocolate,” shared Emily Patel, a Brooklyn resident. “The atmosphere is magical with all the lights and performances.”

Similarly, the Union Square Holiday Market was a huge draw, known for its local artisans and handcrafted items, making it a perfect spot for those searching for one-of-a-kind gifts. Visitors could also enjoy live music, street performers, and the festive spirit of the city’s bustling markets.

Dyker Heights: The Lights of Brooklyn

Farther afield, the neighborhood of Dyker Heights in Brooklyn has become synonymous with over-the-top Christmas decorations. Families in this tight-knit community go all out, adorning their homes with elaborate light displays, giant inflatable Santas, and life-sized nativity scenes. This year, the neighborhood once again dazzled visitors with its intricate displays, drawing crowds from all over to experience this residential holiday wonderland.

“We’ve been coming here for years, and every year it just keeps getting better,” said Steven Jones, a New Jersey native who visits Dyker Heights annually. “It’s amazing how much effort people put into their homes. The kids love it, and it’s such a fun way to celebrate the season.”

The Return of the Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden

For those seeking a more tranquil holiday experience, the New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show provided a beautiful alternative. This beloved annual event returned with its intricate miniature replicas of New York City landmarks, all made from natural materials like bark, leaves, and twigs.

“Every year, the detail in the train show astounds me,” said Julian Williams, a longtime visitor. “The creativity and craftsmanship are unmatched.”

This year’s display featured new additions, including a model of the Statue of Liberty, capturing the city’s holiday charm in miniature form.

A Holiday Celebration Like No Other

In December 2022, New York City once again proved why it remains one of the top destinations for holiday celebrations.
