On October 8, 2024, New York City unveiled a $1 billion initiative to create and preserve affordable housing, addressing the city’s ongoing housing crisis. The plan, called Housing for All NYC, will focus on building new units in underserved neighborhoods and refurbishing existing housing stock to improve living conditions for thousands of residents.
“Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home,” said Mayor Eric Adams during the announcement in East Harlem. The initiative includes incentives for developers to build affordable units, funding for tenant protection programs, and grants for community organizations working on housing justice.
The plan prioritizes neighborhoods disproportionately affected by gentrification and displacement, with a goal of creating 30,000 affordable housing units by 2030. It also allocates resources for housing the city’s homeless population, including the development of permanent supportive housing.
Housing advocates welcomed the initiative but stressed the need for swift implementation and oversight to ensure that funds reach the communities most in need. As NYC continues to grapple with rising rents and limited housing supply, Housing for All NYC represents a significant step toward addressing one of the city’s most pressing issues.
