On September 16, 2024, the New York City Council approved a $300 million plan to restore and modernize the historic Coney Island Boardwalk. The comprehensive revitalization project will include replacing the boardwalk’s aging wooden planks with sustainable materials, upgrading lighting for improved safety, and introducing new attractions to draw visitors year-round.

“This is about preserving history while embracing the future,” said Councilmember Ari Kagan, who represents the district. The project aims to maintain the boardwalk’s charm while addressing decades of wear and tear, ensuring it remains a beloved destination for both residents and tourists.

Local business owners and community leaders expressed optimism about the plan, which is expected to boost economic activity and enhance the neighborhood’s appeal. Plans also include improved storm resiliency measures to protect the boardwalk from future weather events, a vital upgrade for the coastal area.

Construction is slated to begin in early 2025, with a projected completion date of 2027. As one of NYC’s most iconic landmarks, the revitalized Coney Island Boardwalk will continue to serve as a symbol of summer fun and community connection for generations to come.
