With temperatures soaring into the 90s, New York City extended the hours of its outdoor pools on August 23, 2024, to help residents stay cool during an intense summer heatwave. Cooling centers were also opened across libraries, community centers, and other public spaces in all five boroughs, ensuring that New Yorkers had multiple options to beat the heat.

“We’re doing everything we can to keep our residents safe and comfortable,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. The extended pool hours, particularly in underserved areas, were welcomed by families and children seeking relief from the oppressive heat. Pools that normally closed at dusk remained open late into the evening, creating a lively and refreshing environment for locals.

The city’s efforts included increased staffing for pools and expanded outreach to let residents know about the additional services available. Cooling centers saw high attendance, providing air-conditioned spaces along with access to water and other amenities. Public health officials encouraged residents to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

The swift response highlighted the city’s commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable communities during extreme weather events. By extending pool hours and offering cooling centers, NYC demonstrated how proactive measures can improve the well-being of its residents during challenging times.
