The New York City Marathon announced a historic change today, introducing a dedicated non-binary category for runners in the 2024 race. The decision, praised as a milestone in inclusivity, follows similar moves by other major marathons worldwide.
“This is about making every runner feel seen and celebrated,” said Ted Metellus, race director for the New York Road Runners. The non-binary division will include equal prize money and recognition, with registration opening later this month.
Advocacy groups hailed the decision as a step forward for LGBTQ+ representation in sports. “This sends a powerful message that sports are for everyone,” said Alex Rivera, director of Pride in Running NYC.
