In a historic move, the New York City Council passed groundbreaking legislation on August 9, 2024, establishing minimum wage protections, mandatory safety training, and guaranteed rest breaks for app-based delivery workers. The bill, the first of its kind in the United States, sets a new standard for fair treatment in the gig economy and underscores the essential role these workers play in the city’s infrastructure.

“These workers are the backbone of our city, ensuring that New Yorkers receive food, groceries, and other essentials quickly and efficiently,” said Council Member Carlos Menchaca, who spearheaded the legislation. The bill requires delivery companies to pay workers at least $20 per hour by 2025, provide protective gear, and implement mandatory training programs on traffic safety.

While the legislation was celebrated by worker advocacy groups, some app-based platforms have vowed to challenge the new rules in court. However, city officials remain confident that the law will withstand legal scrutiny, as it addresses critical issues such as labor rights and workplace safety.

For thousands of delivery workers across NYC, the new legislation represents a long-overdue recognition of their contributions. Advocates hope the bill will serve as a model for other cities across the country, driving meaningful change in how gig workers are treated nationwide.
