NYC Pride March 2025 Draws Over 2 Million in Powerful Celebration of Protest and Unity

by NY Review Contributor

In a vibrant display of solidarity and resilience, more than two million people filled the streets of Manhattan on Sunday for the 2025 NYC Pride March, making it one of the largest LGBTQIA+ civil rights demonstrations in the world. Under the theme “Rise Up: Pride in Protest,” the event honored the legacy of the 1970 inaugural Pride March while addressing contemporary challenges facing the LGBTQIA+ community.

A March Rooted in Resistance

The march commenced at 11 a.m. from 26th Street and Fifth Avenue, proceeding south through Greenwich Village and culminating at 15th Street and Seventh Avenue. This year’s theme served as a poignant reminder of Pride’s origins in protest, particularly in light of recent political developments, including the return of Donald Trump to the presidency and subsequent policy shifts affecting LGBTQIA+ rights. Organizers emphasized the importance of unity and activism in confronting these challenges.

Honoring Trailblazers and Advocates

Leading the march were five Grand Marshals recognized for their significant contributions to the LGBTQIA+ community:

  • Karine Jean-Pierre, former White House Press Secretary and the first Black and openly queer individual to hold the position.
  • Marti Gould Cummings, a drag artist and activist known for their advocacy work and historic candidacy as the first openly nonbinary person to run for office in New York City.
  • DJ Lina, a prominent figure in the queer nightlife scene and a vocal advocate for trans rights.
  • Elisa Crespo, Executive Director of the Stonewall Community Foundation, dedicated to uplifting marginalized voices within the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • Transformative Schools, a nonprofit organization committed to supporting trans and queer educators and students.

“Our marshals this year remind us that we are stronger when we are united in our fight for equality and liberation,” said NYC Pride Co-Chair Kazz Alexander.

A Celebration Amidst Challenges

Despite a reported 20% decrease in corporate sponsorships, attributed to shifting political climates and corporate hesitancy, the march maintained its spirited atmosphere. Participants adorned in colorful attire and waving Pride flags filled the streets, embodying the event’s enduring spirit. The NYPD reported no credible threats, and security measures included 10,000 metal barriers and an increased police presence to ensure the safety of attendees.

Continuing the Legacy

The 2025 NYC Pride March not only celebrated the progress made over the past decades but also served as a call to action against ongoing discrimination and legislative challenges. As the community faces new obstacles, the march stood as a testament to the enduring power of unity, visibility, and protest in the pursuit of equality.
