As the new academic year began on September 3, 2024, New York City public schools rolled out expanded mental health services to support students’ emotional and psychological well-being. Under the Healthy Minds NYC initiative, schools now offer on-site counselors, group therapy sessions, and wellness workshops designed to address the growing mental health needs of children and teens.
“Our students’ well-being is as important as their academic success,” said Schools Chancellor David Banks. The program, funded by a $50 million state grant, aims to create safe spaces where students can openly discuss challenges ranging from anxiety to academic stress. Schools in underserved neighborhoods will receive additional resources to ensure equitable access.
Parents and educators have praised the initiative, highlighting its potential to address rising rates of depression and anxiety among youth. “This is a lifeline for so many students,” said Maria Delgado, a Bronx parent whose son now has access to counseling services within his school.
Experts believe the initiative will significantly improve academic outcomes by addressing underlying mental health challenges. By prioritizing emotional wellness, NYC public schools are taking a proactive approach to ensuring students are equipped to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
