Shakespeare & Co., New York City’s oldest family-owned bookstore, announced today it will close its doors after 125 years in business. The beloved Upper West Side landmark, known for its cozy atmosphere and rare book collection, cited rising rents and the challenges of competing with online retailers.
“It’s the end of an era,” said owner Margaret Peterson, whose family founded the shop in 1899. “We’ve cherished being part of this community, but it’s time to say goodbye.”
News of the closure sparked an outpouring of nostalgia from residents and literary figures alike. The store plans to hold a farewell event next month, featuring book signings and discounts.
