Get Your REAL ID Before the Deadline
NEW YORK – With just one month left before the enforcement date, travelers need to be prepared to obtain their REAL ID. Starting May 7, anyone flying domestically in the United States will require a REAL ID, Enhanced ID, or passport to pass through TSA security checkpoints.
Upcoming Deadline for REAL ID
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will enforce the REAL ID requirement starting on May 7, 2025. After this date, travelers who do not possess a REAL ID or an equivalent form of identification will face restrictions when boarding domestic flights or entering secure federal facilities.
For clarity on the required documents, travelers can refer to resources provided by the TSA and DMV.
Understanding REAL ID
The REAL ID Act, enacted by Congress in 2005, mandates that all states meet minimum security requirements for issuing driver’s licenses and identification cards. This requirement stems from recommendations made by the 9/11 Commission aimed at enhancing national security.
Although older IDs will still be valid for activities such as driving, purchasing age-restricted items, and voting, they will not suffice for domestic travel post-deadline.
Requirements for Obtaining a REAL ID
To apply for a REAL ID, applicants are advised to visit their local DMV office after completing an online application. Essential documents needed for this process include:
- Your full legal name
- Date of birth
- Social security number
- Two proofs of your principal residence
- Documentation of lawful status
For additional details and to initiate the application, visit the official DMV website.
Do You Need a REAL ID to Fly?
According to the DHS, a REAL ID is essential for U.S. citizens flying domestically. Nonetheless, travelers can still use alternative forms of ID, such as a passport, to meet identification requirements.
International Travel Considerations
It is important to note that while a REAL ID is necessary for domestic flights, international travelers are still required to carry a passport, as the REAL ID does not fulfill the identification needs for international travel.
Difference Between REAL ID and Enhanced ID
Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs) can serve as acceptable alternatives to REAL IDs and may not carry the same star designation. However, they meet the necessary identification standards for travel and entry into secured areas.
Validity of REAL ID
The duration of a REAL ID’s validity can vary. For the most accurate information, individuals should check with their local DMV office.
If You Already Have a Passport
“If you have a passport, you’re fine. That’s a strong, valid credential. And you can use that,” explained Robert Sinclair Jr., senior manager of Public Affairs at AAA Northeast. “If you want to fly without the passport, then you have to have that REAL ID domestically.”
