New York City launched a pilot program today to extend commuter ferry service to Queens neighborhoods underserved by traditional transit options. The expanded routes connect Astoria, Whitestone, and Bayside to Manhattan’s East Side, offering a quicker and scenic alternative to subways and buses.
Mayor Eric Adams hailed the launch as a step toward improving transportation equity. “This program brings modern, reliable transit options to communities that have been overlooked for too long,” Adams said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The pilot will run for six months, with fares matching subway prices. Residents have already praised the new service for its convenience and comfort, though some have called for additional stops in the Bronx and Staten Island.
