NEW YORK – In a surprising twist of urban wildlife behavior, a turkey affectionately identified as Rosie—or “Astoria,” according to some locals—has made headlines after her unexpected migration from Roosevelt Island to Manhattan. This remarkable turkey, known for her spirited exploration of city streets, has captivated the hearts of many New Yorkers as she adapts to her new surroundings.
A Local Celebrity Takes Flight
Rosie’s story began approximately a year ago when she became a familiar sight on Roosevelt Island. Residents quickly grew fond of her antics, often spotting her confidently walking along sidewalks, scrounging for food, and even attempting to enter building lobbies.
“She used to nest in the back of my building. She even tried to go inside the building—they had to shoo her out of the lobby!”
This week, however, Rosie took a bold leap across the East River to Manhattan, a move attributed to the current mating season as suggested by birdwatcher David Barrett from Manhattan Bird Alert.
Spotted in Midtown
Since her adventurous crossing, Rosie has been seen in various locations across Midtown, including Honey Locust Park on 59th Street. Her presence has not gone unnoticed; she seems to be relishing her new urban landscape, which presents both opportunities and challenges.

“Manhattan is much more dangerous than Roosevelt Island,” Barrett noted. “There’s more traffic, there are people who don’t know how to deal with her… all of these things make life more treacherous for her in Midtown Manhattan.”
