Starbucks is commemorating the 30th anniversary of its iconic Frappuccino by introducing a new line of beverages: the Strato Frappuccino Blended Beverages. Launched nationwide on July 8, these drinks feature layered cold foam flavors and vibrant colors, offering a modern twist on the classic beverage.
The term “Strato” is derived from the Italian word for “layer,” aptly describing the new drinks’ structure. Instead of the traditional whipped cream topping, these beverages are adorned with flavored cold foam, adding both visual appeal and a unique texture. The Strato Frappuccinos are available in three distinct flavors: Brown Sugar Strato Frappuccino, made with Frappuccino roast coffee, milk, and ice, topped with brown sugar-flavored cream cold foam and cinnamon; Strawberry Matcha Strato Frappuccino, which blends unsweetened matcha, classic syrup, milk, and ice with strawberry-flavored cream cold foam; and Salted Caramel Mocha Strato Frappuccino, which combines mocha sauce, coffee, milk, and ice with salted caramel-flavored cream cold foam and a caramel drizzle.
These new offerings are part of Starbucks’ ongoing efforts to innovate and cater to evolving customer preferences. Susan Engdahl, part of the team behind the beverage’s creation, stated, “As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Frappuccino, we’re excited to offer a modern take on a classic beverage, with layers of flavor and creamy texture that customers are craving right now.”
Before the nationwide rollout, the Strato Frappuccinos were tested in select locations as part of Starbucks’ “Starting Five” program. This initiative involves piloting new menu items in five stores to gather feedback from both baristas and customers. The positive reception during this phase played a crucial role in refining the beverages for broader release.
In addition to the new Frappuccino line, Starbucks is testing a protein-infused cold foam in select U.S. locations. This innovative topping contains between 15 and 18 grams of protein and is designed to blend seamlessly into beverages without altering their texture. Initially paired with a sugar-free vanilla latte, the protein cold foam is part of Starbucks’ broader strategy to modernize its menu and offer health-conscious options.
Coinciding with the beverage launch, Starbucks is reintroducing its Artist Collaboration Series. The latest collection features merchandise designed by Nigerian-American artist Shadé Akanbi. Her designs, which include cold cups and a ceramic tumbler, reflect her unique artistic perspective and are available in Starbucks stores starting July 8.
The original Frappuccino was introduced in 1995, following Starbucks’ acquisition of The Coffee Connection, where the drink was first developed. Over the past three decades, the Frappuccino has become a staple in Starbucks’ menu, known for its versatility and appeal across various demographics.
With the introduction of the Strato Frappuccino line, Starbucks continues to innovate while honoring its legacy. The new beverages, along with the protein cold foam and artist-designed merchandise, exemplify the company’s commitment to evolving with its customers’ tastes and preferences.
