In a move toward greener transportation, New York City introduced its first hybrid-electric Staten Island Ferry on October 9, 2024. The new vessel, named Clean Harbor, marks the beginning of the city’s plan to convert its ferry fleet to hybrid-electric power by 2035. The initiative is part of NYC’s broader sustainability goals, which include reducing greenhouse gas emissions from public transportation.
“This is a historic step for sustainable transit in New York City,” said Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez at the ferry’s inaugural trip. The Clean Harbor uses battery-powered engines supplemented by diesel, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions compared to traditional ferries.
Commuters praised the ferry’s quiet and smooth ride, as well as its modern amenities, including onboard Wi-Fi and solar-powered charging stations. The hybrid-electric fleet is expected to reduce ferry-related carbon emissions by 40%, improving air quality for Staten Island and Lower Manhattan residents.
Environmental groups hailed the transition as a critical milestone in the city’s fight against climate change. With more hybrid-electric vessels scheduled to launch in the coming years, NYC is demonstrating its commitment to making public transit both efficient and eco-friendly.
