Subway Introduces Gender-Neutral Announcements

by NY Review Team

On September 12, 2024, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced the implementation of gender-neutral announcements across its subway and bus systems. Phrases such as “ladies and gentlemen” have been replaced with more inclusive terms like “passengers” and “riders,” part of the city’s ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion.

“This is about creating a transit system that respects and welcomes everyone,” said MTA Chair Janno Lieber. The change comes alongside other accessibility initiatives, including improved signage for people with disabilities and expanded service alerts in multiple languages.

Advocacy groups and LGBTQ+ organizations praised the MTA for taking steps to make public transportation more inclusive. “Representation matters, even in everyday spaces like the subway,” said Emily Perez, director of NYC Pride. Riders have noted the change positively, appreciating the city’s effort to ensure everyone feels acknowledged.

As the MTA continues to modernize its transit system, these updates reflect NYC’s commitment to equity and inclusivity, ensuring that one of the world’s largest public transportation networks serves all New Yorkers.
