Current Status of Executions

States with Upcoming Executions

Several states are preparing for future executions throughout 2025. Notably, Alabama, Arizona, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas are scheduled to proceed with executions, despite some delays.

Texas

  • Moises Sandoval Mendoza, 41, is set to be executed by lethal injection on April 23, following his conviction for strangling a woman in Collin County in 2004.
  • Matthew Johnson will be executed on May 20 for a 2012 crime in which he killed a woman after dousing her with bleach and setting her on fire.

Arizona

Aaron Gunches, 53, is scheduled for lethal injection, marking Arizona’s first execution in over two years. Gunches was convicted for the 2002 shooting of Ted Price.

Oklahoma and Florida

  • Wendell Grissom, 56, is to be executed by lethal injection on March 20 for his role in a 1996 murder.
  • Edward Thomas James, 63, faces execution on March 20 for the 1993 murder and rape of a woman and her granddaughter.
  • Michael Tanzi, 48, is set for execution on April 8 after being convicted of kidnapping and murder.

Other States

South Carolina: Mikal Mahdi is scheduled for execution on April 11 after killing an off-duty police officer.

Alabama: James Osgood is set to be executed by lethal injection on April 24 for a 2010 homicide.

Tennessee has a series of executions scheduled from May to December, involving multiple convicted individuals.

Ohio has two executions pending, with Timothy Coleman on October 30 and Kareem Jackson on December 10, though they may face postponements as has been the pattern in recent years.

The Context of Executions in March 2025

This March could potentially set a record for executions, with up to nine expected. This number highlights a significant increase from prior months, as noted by the Death Penalty Information Center.
