The Met Unveils Exhibit on Indigenous Climate Perspectives

The Metropolitan Museum of Art debuted a groundbreaking exhibit titled Earth Guardians: Indigenous Visions of Climate and Nature on September 25, 2024, as part of its Climate Week programming. The exhibit highlights the environmental knowledge and cultural practices of Indigenous communities worldwide, focusing on their approaches to sustainability and stewardship of natural resources.

“This exhibit celebrates the wisdom of Indigenous communities and their vital role in combating climate change,” said Met Director Max Hollein during the opening ceremony. The collection features artifacts, artworks, and multimedia installations from over 20 Indigenous cultures, illustrating how their traditions offer insights into protecting the planet.

Visitors can explore themes such as water conservation, reforestation, and the interconnectedness of humans and nature through both ancient and contemporary works. The exhibit also includes interactive lectures and panels led by Indigenous leaders, offering firsthand accounts of their communities’ efforts to address environmental challenges.

Running through December, Earth Guardians is being hailed as a powerful reminder of the importance of centering Indigenous voices in global conversations about climate change. Attendees praised the exhibit for combining art, history, and advocacy, encouraging reflection on the urgency of sustainability.
