New York, November 2025. After a triumphant debut at the Buenos Aires International Book Fair 2025, Dominican-Palestinian author Sugel Gamal has emerged as one of the most compelling new voices in contemporary Latin American literature. His acclaimed short story collection, Un Playlist para Alejandra y Otros Cuentos, published by BECREA Editorial (Mexico City), has become a regional best-seller, captivating readers with its emotional depth, musical rhythm, and vivid portrait of modern Santo Domingo.

Blending nostalgia, migration, and digital intimacy, Gamal’s stories have leapt beyond the printed page. Many have been adapted into spoken-word performances and viral videos, resonating with audiences across the Americas. His writing transforms individual experience into collective memory, exploring love, identity, and belonging through the pulse of a generation divided between screens and streets, home and exile.

Now on his U.S. university and library tour, Gamal is bringing his stories to new audiences through live readings, creative dialogues, and community gatherings in New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The tour seeks to connect Latin American and Caribbean students in the diaspora through storytelling, art, and sound, a continuation of Gamal’s belief that literature must inhabit the same living spaces as culture itself. This tour also includes notable stops across Latin America, including Argentina, the Palestinian Club in Santiago de Chile, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic.

“Sugel Gamal represents a new kind of Dominican writer, one who writes with the rhythm of the city, the pulse of exile, and the voice of an entire generation looking for meaning in transit,” said Benny Ferreira, editor at BECREA Editorial in Mexico City. “His book is both a love letter and a rebellion, a celebration of language, memory, and emotional courage.”

Born in Santo Domingo to a Palestinian family, Sugel Gamal studied at Western Michigan University, where he began writing about identity, displacement, and the emotional soundscape of migration. Through his essays and public appearances, he has insisted that the identity of the diaspora cannot be confined to narratives of victimization or dehumanization, but must also celebrate a history of resilience, creativity, and success, particularly of Palestinian communities thriving around the world. “The Palestinian identity cannot be limited to one unique thing. To be Palestinian is an ethnic and national identity, a historic resistance; and a diaspora that has flourished in exile. These elements are integrated, superposed.” He also notes, “The diaspora is the realization of the Free Palestinian dream.”

Un Playlist para Alejandra y Otros Cuentos gathers stories that move effortlessly between continents, timelines, and emotional states. The collection is a testament to shared human experience, the bridges between love and loss, belonging and exile, memory and hope.

The title story, Un Playlist para Alejandra, has become a cultural symbol among young Dominicans and Latinos abroad. It merges music and heartbreak with poetic realism, standing as an ode to Santo Domingo, its neighborhoods, contradictions, and hidden beauty that only reveals itself to those who listen deeply.

Gamal’s ability to connect deeply with his readers stems from his unwavering focus on the emotional and human aspects of migration, identity, and diaspora. Through his writing, he bridges the cultural gaps that often divide communities, offering a narrative that resonates with both those who have lived the experience and those who yearn to understand it. His stories present not only the challenges of migration but also the triumphs of finding connection, belonging, and joy in unfamiliar places. By weaving these themes into his writing, Gamal has cultivated a voice that speaks to a global audience, with themes that transcend borders and languages, uniting people through shared experiences.

As Gamal’s tour continues across the U.S. and Latin America, his work is inspiring a new generation of writers, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, to share their own stories of resilience, hope, and struggle. With each reading, he fosters conversations about the power of storytelling as a tool for healing, self-expression, and cultural preservation. Whether in an intimate university lecture hall or a bustling library, Sugel Gamal’s words carry the weight of a generation, marking the beginning of a new era in Latin American and Caribbean literature.

As Sugel Gamal continues his North American tour, he is being hailed as a rising literary force who bridges tradition and modernity, page and performance, homeland and diaspora. His voice stands at the intersection of urban poetry, digital culture, and transnational identity, redefining what it means to be a writer in the 21st century.

His book, Un Playlist para Alejandra y Otros Cuentos, is also now available for purchase on Amazon, and it is being translated into English, French, and Brazilian Portuguese.
