“The Nutcracker” Ballet Returns to Lincoln Center

by NY Review Contributor

NEW YORK CITY, December 10, 2024 — The holiday season in New York officially sparkles with tradition as the New York City Ballet brings back its cherished production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® at Lincoln Center. Now in its 70th season, the iconic ballet opened on November 29 at the David H. Koch Theater and will run through January 5, 2025. Known for its timeless choreography, elaborate set pieces, and heartwarming narrative, this year’s performance continues to delight audiences of all ages, reaffirming its place as a cornerstone of New York’s cultural calendar.

Set to the stirring compositions of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Balanchine’s interpretation of The Nutcracker transports audiences into a magical world of toy soldiers, dancing snowflakes, and sugar plum fairies. From the opening party scene to the final celebration in the Land of Sweets, the production weaves a compelling story through masterful dance, vivid storytelling, and meticulous stagecraft. The two-act ballet centers around young Marie, who, after receiving a nutcracker doll from the mysterious Drosselmeier, embarks on a fantastical journey on Christmas Eve.

What sets this production apart is its grand scale and visual opulence. The performance features more than 150 dancers and musicians, along with over 120 children from the School of American Ballet, who bring youthful charm and energy to the stage. One of the most iconic stage effects—the Christmas tree that grows from 16 to 41 feet during the first act—continues to awe audiences year after year. The snowfall scene, complete with swirling flakes and ethereal lighting, remains one of the most magical moments in the ballet.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of costume and stage designers ensures each detail contributes to the performance’s immersive quality. Costumes include more than 150 unique designs, from the dazzling tutus of the Dewdrop and Sugarplum Fairy to the enormous, crowd-favorite Mother Ginger costume, which measures nine feet wide and weighs 85 pounds. The elaborate scenery and period-perfect decor evoke a turn-of-the-century charm, enhancing the fantasy of the story while staying grounded in tradition.

This year’s run introduces something new with a Sensory Friendly Performance scheduled for January 5 at 1 p.m. Designed to accommodate individuals with sensory sensitivities, the adapted performance includes adjustments such as moderated lighting and sound levels, a reduction in sudden noises, and designated quiet areas throughout the venue. This effort reflects NYCB’s broader commitment to accessibility and inclusivity in the arts.

Ticket prices begin at $60, with premium options available for those seeking an enhanced experience. The Sweet Seat VIP Package includes premium orchestra seating, a souvenir program book, and a special photo opportunity to commemorate the outing. Performances are held at the David H. Koch Theater, located in the heart of Lincoln Center at Columbus Avenue and 63rd Street, making it easily accessible to locals and tourists alike.

The return of The Nutcracker is more than a ballet performance—it’s a New York City tradition that transcends generations. Each year, families attend together, building memories and passing down their love for dance, music, and holiday magic. For many, the season would feel incomplete without the vision of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince gliding across the stage to Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable score.

As the curtain rises night after night, The Nutcracker continues to embody the joy, wonder, and timeless beauty of the holiday season. For anyone in New York this December, it is a must-see performance that promises to enchant and inspire, just as it has for decades.
