NEW YORK CITY, December 31, 2024 — As the final hours of 2024 tick away, New York City is poised to host its iconic New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, drawing an anticipated crowd of approximately one million revelers. The event promises a night filled with star-studded performances, heightened security measures, and the traditional midnight ball drop, all set against the backdrop of chilly winter temperatures.
The festivities officially commence at 6:00 p.m. EST with the ceremonial lighting and raising of the New Year’s Eve Ball atop One Times Square. This year’s ball, a 12-foot-diameter geodesic sphere adorned with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles and illuminated by over 32,000 LEDs, will descend a 70-foot pole in the final 60 seconds of the year, marking the transition to 2025.
A lineup of high-profile performers is set to entertain both the on-site audience and viewers worldwide. Country music star Carrie Underwood, pop groups Jonas Brothers and TLC, and singer-songwriter Rita Ora are among the artists scheduled to perform. Additionally, legendary crooner Paul Anka will deliver a rendition of “My Way,” and Flo Rida is expected to energize the crowd with his chart-topping hits.
For those unable to attend in person, multiple broadcast networks will provide live coverage of the event. ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest,” CNN’s “New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen,” Telemundo’s “Bienvenido 2025,” and Univision’s “¡Feliz 2025!” will all feature segments from Times Square. Additionally, a commercial-free webcast will stream the celebration from 6:00 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. EST on platforms including TimesSquareNYC.org and LiveStream.com/2024.
In light of global security concerns, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has implemented comprehensive safety measures to ensure the well-being of attendees. Over 600 officers, including members of elite units such as the Emergency Services Unit and the Counterterrorism Bureau, will be deployed throughout the area. Enhanced surveillance will include the use of drones, rooftop observation posts, and bomb-sniffing canine teams. All attendees will be subject to security screenings, and items such as backpacks, large bags, and alcohol will be prohibited within the event perimeter.
Access to viewing areas will be managed through designated entry points at 49th, 52nd, and 56th Streets along 6th and 8th Avenues. Streets in and around Times Square will begin closing at 4:00 a.m. on December 31, with additional closures starting at 11:00 a.m. Public transportation is strongly recommended, as parking will be extremely limited, and certain subway stations may experience service changes due to the event.
Despite the forecasted cold temperatures, the spirit of celebration remains undeterred. Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the city’s commitment to safety and enjoyment, stating, “While thousands of people enjoy themselves, we’re going to make sure through all of our agencies involved… that they’re safe and enjoy this city.”
As the world watches, Times Square stands ready to bid farewell to 2024 and welcome 2025 with a display of unity, resilience, and festivity that has become a hallmark of New York City’s enduring spirit.
