Walmart stores recently recalled more than 12,000 cartons of chicken broth over concerns that the product’s packaging was defective.

The recalled products are Great Value brands. chicken soupsold in 48-ounce containers, according to a Food and Drug Administration release.

recall began on December 11, but the notice was posted on the FDA’s website on January 8.

The FDA said the recalled cartons were sent to stores in Alabama and Arkansas, but Walmart said in a statement to FOX News Digital on Friday that a total of 242 stores in nine states were affected.

The other states were Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.

The reason for the recall is that “the packaging is defective, which may compromise the sterility of the product and lead to spoilage.”

A total of 2,023 items were subject to recall.

Each case contains 6 products, meaning 12,138 pieces. soup carton I was reminded.

The “use by date” of the recalled products was March 25, 2026.

It has a UPC code of 007874206684.

The recall notice did not indicate whether any illnesses have been reported from consuming the chicken soup.

“The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. “As soon as we became aware of the issue, we took steps to remove all affected products from some of our affected stores. We continue to work with our suppliers to investigate.”

A company spokesperson said anyone who believes they may own a recalled product should throw it away and request a full refund.

According to the website Southern Living, unopened, shelf-stable cartons and cans of chicken soup can last for years in your pantry.

However, once you open these items, the leftover broth should be stored in the refrigerator for about 3 to 4 days, according to the USDA website.

Leftover chicken broth can be frozen and stored in the freezer for two to three months, according to the USDA.

Southern Living added that leftover chicken soup that smells strange or looks discolored or moldy is spoiled and should not be consumed.

Can be caused by eating spoiled chicken soup food poisoning.
