WorldPride 2025 Kicks Off in Washington D.C. with Star-Studded Events

WorldPride 2025 has officially launched in Washington, D.C., transforming the U.S. capital into a dazzling celebration of LGBTQ+ pride, culture, and resilience. Running from May 17 to June 8, the international event marks the 50th anniversary of Pride in D.C. and is expected to draw more than 2 million attendees from around the world.

With an extensive schedule that includes parades, concerts, panel discussions, film festivals, dance parties, and cultural exhibitions, the event aims to highlight the intersections of race, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Organizers emphasize inclusivity and community empowerment throughout the multi-week celebration.


A Star-Studded Kickoff to Remember

The festivities officially began with a powerful performance by global superstar Shakira at Nationals Park on May 31. The concert, part of her ongoing world tour, doubled as the WorldPride Welcome Ceremony and set a festive tone for the events ahead.

Grace Jones and Janelle Monáe will headline another major concert on June 5 at The Anthem, promising an electrifying evening of music and unity. These performances are just the beginning of an impressive entertainment lineup that also includes Doechii and other celebrated artists.


A Diverse Slate of Events

WorldPride 2025 offers a rich tapestry of programming that caters to a wide spectrum of communities within the LGBTQ+ population. Key highlights include:

  • DC Black Pride: Celebrating over 30 years of Black LGBTQ+ excellence, this event includes the renowned Unity Ball, vibrant dance parties, and cultural showcases. It has become one of the largest and most influential Black Pride events globally.

  • Latinx Pride: With the theme “¡Libre soy!” (I am free), this series includes more than 20 events that highlight Latinx LGBTQ+ culture and resilience through music, poetry, dance, and activism.

  • Trans Pride: Offering workshops, health resources, and community dialogues, this initiative shines a light on the experiences and challenges faced by transgender individuals.

  • API Pride and Silver Pride: These events focus on the Asian Pacific Islander and senior LGBTQ+ communities, featuring cultural performances, wellness sessions, and intergenerational discussions.

Additionally, the WorldPride Film Festival and Capital Cup Sports Festival add more variety, drawing participants from across cultural and athletic communities. Historical walking tours, drag brunches, youth-led forums, and art exhibitions round out the offerings.


Upcoming Major Attractions

  • WorldPride Parade: Scheduled for June 7, this parade will weave through central D.C., featuring dazzling floats, international LGBTQ+ organizations, and community groups from all over the globe.

  • WorldPride Street Festival: Taking place June 7-8, the festival will offer food, live entertainment, vendor booths, and interactive exhibits in a carnival-like atmosphere.

  • International March and Rally: On June 8, thousands are expected to gather at the Lincoln Memorial to advocate for global LGBTQ+ rights, visibility, and solidarity.


Community and Business Involvement

Local businesses, restaurants, and nonprofit organizations are deeply involved in the celebration. Numerous LGBTQ+-friendly venues are offering themed nights, special menus, and fundraising events to support the cause.

Well-known restaurants and nightlife hotspots across D.C. are spotlighting LGBTQ+ artists, hosting drag performances, and providing inclusive spaces for people of all identities and orientations to gather.


Facing Modern Challenges

While WorldPride 2025 radiates joy and celebration, it also unfolds against a backdrop of political tension. Concerns have been raised by some international groups regarding policies in the United States, prompting heightened attention to safety and inclusivity measures. Organizers have responded by reinforcing security protocols and emphasizing a commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors.
