NYC Launches Snow Angels Volunteer Program to Assist Vulnerable Residents

December 22, 2024

The New York City Department of Aging has introduced the Snow Angels program, a new volunteer initiative aimed at helping elderly and disabled residents stay safe during winter storms. The program recruits volunteers to shovel snow from sidewalks and driveways, ensuring that those who are unable to do so themselves are not left isolated or at risk due to hazardous conditions.

“This program is about neighbors helping neighbors,” said Commissioner Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez during the program’s launch. “We want to create a community where everyone feels supported, especially during the harsh winter months.”

The Snow Angels initiative is designed to address the challenges faced by the city’s vulnerable populations, who may struggle with mobility or health issues that prevent them from clearing snow. Safe sidewalks and driveways are critical for preventing falls, ensuring emergency access, and maintaining residents’ ability to go about their daily lives.

Over 5,000 volunteers have already signed up to be part of the program. These community members will be assigned to shovel snow for residents in need, with priority given to areas most impacted by winter weather. Volunteers will also be equipped with resources and guidance to ensure their efforts are both effective and safe.

Residents who need assistance can request help through the city’s 311 hotline, making the program easily accessible for those who may not have other support systems. The city is encouraging more volunteers to join the effort, especially ahead of the heavier snowfall expected in the coming months.

Community leaders and residents have praised the program for its proactive approach to addressing a common winter challenge. “This is such a thoughtful initiative,” said one Bronx resident. “It’s a great reminder of the importance of looking out for each other, especially during the colder months.”

In addition to helping clear snow, the Snow Angels program fosters a sense of community and connection. Volunteers often check in on the residents they assist, creating opportunities for meaningful interactions and ensuring that vulnerable individuals feel supported and cared for.

The Snow Angels program will operate throughout the winter season, providing critical assistance to thousands of New Yorkers while promoting a spirit of kindness and collaboration.
