New York City, November 16, 2024 – Public high schools in New York City achieved a milestone this year, with the Department of Education announcing a record graduation rate of 86% for 2024. This marks a significant increase from 78% just five years ago, highlighting the city’s ongoing efforts to improve educational outcomes for students.

“This is a testament to the hard work of our students, teachers, and families,” said Schools Chancellor David Banks during the announcement. Banks credited the progress to several initiatives introduced in recent years, including expanded college readiness programs, improved access to mental health services, and an increase in career training opportunities.

Key among these efforts is a renewed focus on preparing students for life beyond high school. The Department of Education has partnered with local colleges and industries to provide workshops, mentorships, and internships that equip students with skills for higher education and the workforce. At the same time, increased funding for school-based mental health services has helped students overcome challenges that could otherwise derail their academic success.

“This success is not just about numbers,” Banks emphasized. “It’s about ensuring that every student has the tools they need to build a brighter future, no matter where they come from.”

While advocacy groups celebrated the achievement, they also urged city officials to continue investing in underserved communities to sustain the momentum. “This is a step in the right direction, but we must ensure that resources reach schools in lower-income neighborhoods,” said Alicia Martinez, director of the NYC Education Equity Alliance. “Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their zip code.”

Teachers and students across the city expressed pride in the progress made. “It’s incredible to see our hard work pay off,” said Rebecca Simmons, a math teacher at a Brooklyn high school. “Our students are so capable, and it’s rewarding to see them achieve their goals.”

For many families, the record graduation rate offers hope and a sense of pride. “My daughter is the first in our family to graduate high school,” said Bronx resident Michael Hernandez. “I’m so grateful for the programs that helped her get here.”

As the city celebrates this achievement, the Department of Education is already looking ahead, vowing to build on the progress by expanding access to resources and opportunities for all students. The record graduation rate is more than a statistic—it’s a reflection of the collective efforts of a city committed to its young people’s success.
