The Rise of Bogg Bags: From Concept to Multi-Million Dollar Empire
NEW YORK – What started as a quest for an ideal beach bag has evolved into a thriving $100 million business. The visionary behind this success story is Kim Vaccarella, founder and CEO of Bogg Bag.
Crafted from EVA foam— the same material found in Crocs and yoga mats— the Bogg Bag is lauded for its waterproof and washable features, making it a favorite among a diverse clientele, from busy moms to avid travelers.
The Journey Begins
The idea of the Bogg Bag was conceived 17 years ago, birthed from Vaccarella’s desire for a functional beach tote. Armed only with a DIY prototype and her “Mommy Millionaire” notebook, she faced numerous setbacks while pitching her concept to New York City manufacturers.
“Everyone told me ‘no,’” Vaccarella reflected on her early attempts. “They said it was too big and too utilitarian—exactly what I wanted. So I decided to make it myself.”
Turning Ideas into Reality
Thanks to a supportive neighbor, Vaccarella was introduced to a manufacturing facility in China, transforming her vision into a tangible product. Her initial order of 300 bags quickly sold out, prompting her to double down and order 600, then even a full container.
“I dipped into our savings, even our kids’ college funds. It was terrifying,” she admitted. The initial shipment arrived with quality issues, leading her to question her choices and consider giving up.
A Shift in Focus
The turning point came with Hurricane Sandy, which devastated parts of the Jersey Shore, igniting Vaccarella’s resolve. Instead of abandoning her venture, she donated over 1,000 bags filled with essential supplies to affected families.
“I just wanted to help; even a small gesture can bring brightness during a dark time,” she said. Although she returned to commercial real estate, the community’s reaction reignited her passion for Bogg Bags.
A flurry of interest on the Facebook page she created reaffirmed the bag’s impact, especially when one message praised the yellow Bogg Bag as a “bright spot in an otherwise dismal place.”
Moments of Opportunity
“Where else can someone ask for $120,000 and turn it into $10 million? That doesn’t happen often,” she joked, highlighting the rarity of her experience.
A Nationwide Phenomenon
Today, Bogg Bags can be found in over 9,500 retail outlets across the United States, including stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale’s. Through a partnership with Fanatics, fans can even acquire bags emblazoned with their favorite sports teams—spanning over 700 franchises nationwide.
