Akili Education has announced the Akili Alumni Marathon, a national holiday-weekend event in Dar es Salaam that will run alongside a Global Universities & Scholarships Expo, positioning Tanzania as a growing pipeline for international student recruitment and alumni engagement.
Organizers say the initiative is designed to address a longstanding challenge in Tanzania’s higher education landscape: strong youth demand for post-secondary opportunities amid limited local university capacity.
Tanzania is among Africa’s most populous countries (5th in Africa), and roughly one-third of its population is youth. At the same time, the Tanzania Commission for Universities lists approximately 50 accredited university institutions operating in the country, an imbalance that has contributed to rising interest in study-abroad pathways.
A Proven Market with Expanding Destination Choices

According to Akili Education, Tanzania’s outbound education market has historically been dominated by India and China, with thousands of Tanzanian students pursuing tertiary education across the two destinations annually.
In recent years, more Tanzanians have also begun studying in Malaysia, Poland, the United Arab Emirates (Dubai), South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, reflecting broader diversification in destination demand.
Organizers add that nearby regional markets including Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda have also intensified competition for African student recruitment.
Event Model Built Around National Holiday Timing
Unlike conventional education expos that rely primarily on booth bookings and unpredictable footfall, Akili Education says the Akili Alumni Marathon is designed as a mass-attendance public event that integrates recruitment and application support within the larger gathering.
The marathon is scheduled during Tanzania’s long Easter period, coinciding with Easter Monday (April 6, 2026) and Karume Day (April 7, 2026), a timing organizers say increases the likelihood of family attendance due to public holidays and school closures. The event is expected to attract 3,000 – 5,000 runners and 7,000 – 10,000 parents and students, according to Akili Education’s estimates.
Organizers also project expanded digital and media amplification, citing 10M+ monthly impressions across Akili Education’s social platforms and 10+ media partners expected to cover the marathon weekend.
Confirmed University Participation and Credibility Signals

Akili Education confirmed early participation from Manipal University Dubai, Middlesex University Dubai, Poornima University (India), and Khalsa University (India), alongside additional universities from East Africa.
The event is expected to be hosted as a national-level platform, with organizers noting that Tanzania’s Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, is confirmed as the Guest of Honour-an endorsement they say strengthens institutional visibility and event credibility.
Guinness World Records Ambition to Boost International Attention
Organizers have also announced an attempt to pursue a Guinness World Records milestone: positioning the Akili Alumni Marathon as the first marathon to feature participants from every nationality recognized by the United Nations, along with other record possibilities linked to international representation. The initiative is intended to increase global visibility and media coverage, offering participating universities an opportunity to align with a high-profile narrative.
Partnership Options and Registration Timeline
Akili Education said international universities can participate through three partnership options:
- Standard Package – USD 3,000
- Premium Package – USD 5,000
- Scholarship Partner – One Full Scholarship
Full package details and participation requirements are available on the event website.
For Indian universities in particular, the organizers announced a performance-based recruitment assurance linked to Premium participation, citing a guarantee of 10 confirmed admissions or a refund of the package fee, as applicable.
Organizers stated that universities seeking inclusion in official branding materials and media rollout should confirm participation by March 10, 2026.
