Riccardo Halac-Ruggeroni’s RHR Luxury stands apart by offering a deeply personal and visionary experience in luxury scent-making.

Riccardo’s journey into the world of home fragrance began unexpectedly. What started as a curiosity about scent eventually led him to become the master perfumer behind RHR Luxury’s exquisite creations. His approach to crafting fragrances is a meticulous blend of biochemistry, perfumery, and personal artistry. Unlike many fragrance companies that rely on pre-blended oils and automated processes, Riccardo creates each scent from scratch. He doesn’t simply add ingredients to a formula; he designs each fragrance, pulling from his extensive research, knowledge, and artistic intuition.

The Art of Blending

For Riccardo, the act of blending is where true magic happens. “Blending is the heart of perfumery,” he says, emphasizing how each fragrance needs to be carefully assembled to achieve the perfect balance. It’s not enough to simply add ingredients together; each note must be considered, every molecule must be in harmony. “You have to learn how to blend these materials and truly understand how they will work together,” he explains. Take, for example, creating fruity or gourmand accords, you must learn the components in say, the smell of tomato leaves, or the fragrance of ripe peaches,” he explains.

This hands-on approach to fragrance creation results in a level of complexity and sophistication that is unparalleled. In his scent “Estancia,” inspired by the vast swathes of land in the Pampas, Riccardo created an intensely green, aromatic fragrance with notes of tomato leaves. “It is both calming and refreshing at the same time,” says Riccardo, “It’s the perfect candle to burn in the kitchen after cooking, or during a hot summer afternoon. But the tomato leaves accord didn’t come easy; it required multiple tryouts.”

Another fragrance, “Siesta,” meaning “nap” in Spanish, is inspired by memories of childhood roaming empty streets and rail lines in the scorching sun of summer afternoons in Argentina, and it contains a juicy peach accord, “We used to cool off by eating fruit we would steal from a bowl inside the fridge, and go sit under the trees in my grandma’s house’s garden, it was our own version of paradise,” he reminisces. “But getting the peach accord right, especially because I added other fruity accords like grape and elderflower to Siesta, took quite some time refining, and I mean months of testing.”

High-perfumery in Luxury Home Fragrance

What truly sets RHR Luxury apart is Riccardo’s philosophy about the emotional role fragrance plays in our lives. “Scent engages you emotionally. Applying perfume changes your mood. Home fragrancing, in my view, should also set a mood,” Riccardo asserts. “I look online and in stores, and the product offering is overwhelming. But because the fragrances offered are generic, mass-compounded, it all smells one-note to me. Once I trained my nose as a perfumer, I was able to build accords to create high-perfumery blends that resonated with my concept of fragrance,” he explains, “And once I entered the world of haute-parfumerie, or high perfumery in English, I did not look back.”

The concept of high perfumery is not new; rather, it harkens to a golden age of perfumery that some place between the 1850’s and 1980’s. Non-existent in home fragrance because home fragrance was born as a mass-market category, Riccardo likens high perfumery to the pinnacle of the craft, where artistry is defined by the use of rare materials, creativity, and sophisticated accord revelation, over mass appeal. “I say accord revelation, because while smelling a fragrance, accords reveal themselves to our nose in stages, telling a story,” he says, “There’s a rhythm and cadence; the materials have been chosen because they impart a specific twist or reinforce the story we are telling. It’s perfumery, not mass-production,” he says.

The Value of Quality Over Mass Appeal

In a world where influencer endorsements and viral marketing often dictate a brand’s success, Riccardo takes a different approach. Rather than focusing on building a huge social media following, he prefers to let his products speak for themselves. “True luxury doesn’t need to shout,” he says. “It speaks through its rarity, authenticity, and quality.” For Riccardo, the goal isn’t to create a brand that appeals to the masses, but rather one that resonates with a select group of individuals who appreciate craftsmanship and quality.

This commitment to quality over quantity is evident in RHR Luxury’s business model. The business is set up to pour on command, and it doesn’t rely on flashy marketing campaigns. This is a twofold sustainable practice. “If we talk marketing, currently, every brand out there is vying for three seconds of attention. It can drive any head of marketing insane if you have an investor boss above you telling you that a competing brand, so-and-so, has more engagement than yours, so you have to go back to the drawing board, month after month. Being independent allows me a level of freedom where I don’t have to worry about others, because my work doesn’t compare to theirs,” Riccardo explains. “The market, in terms of benchmark, is stuck in an old paradigm of compounded fragrance manufactured at a large scale. Customers have become more savvy, their noses more educated,” he says. “If we talk production, well, I couldn’t prepare a stock and hope for the best, that is not what perfumers do. The best option for me has always been to pour fresh, so the customer gets a product recently made, not something that has been sitting in a warehouse for months.”

RHR Luxury’s Expanding Reach

Recently, RHR Luxury’s dedication to craft and authenticity earned it a spot on Scentissime, a niche platform that celebrates artistic and bespoke perfumery. This recognition is a testament to the brand’s growing influence in the luxury fragrance world. For Riccardo, however, success isn’t measured by follower counts or social media metrics. “A returning customer who truly loves your product, that’s a real influence,” he says. “I’m focused on building something timeless.”

In a world dominated by trends, RHR Luxury’s dedication to slow, thoughtful creation is a breath of fresh air. It’s a reminder that luxury doesn’t need to be loud or fast to be impactful. Sometimes, the quietest and most thoughtful approaches make the biggest impact.
