Excitement filled the Bronx Zoo today as a baby giraffe was born, marking a rare and joyful event for the facility. The healthy female calf, standing nearly six feet tall, took her first wobbly steps just hours after birth.
“This birth is a triumph for our giraffe conservation efforts,” said Zoo Director Marcia Hunt. The zoo plans to hold a public naming contest, with proceeds benefiting wildlife preservation programs. Visitors will be able to see the calf beginning next week.
