Chicago Native Becomes First American Pope, Taking the Name Leo XIV

by Ny Review Team

In a groundbreaking moment for the Catholic Church, a Chicago-born missionary and former Villanova University student has been elected as the first American Pope. Taking the papal name Leo XIV, the new pontiff’s appointment marks a significant chapter in the Church’s 2,000-year history and reflects the expanding global diversity of its leadership.

From Chicago to the Vatican

Robert Francis Prevost was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in the nearby suburb of Dolton. His academic journey led him to Villanova University, where he graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1977. He soon entered the Order of St. Augustine and took his first vows in 1978, setting the foundation for a lifetime of religious service.

Prevost continued his religious studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, earning a Master of Divinity and becoming ordained in 1982. He later pursued advanced theological education in Rome, receiving licentiate and doctorate degrees in canon law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas by 1987.

His vocation took him to Peru, where he served for many years as a missionary. There, he held roles including parish pastor, seminary educator, diocesan official, and administrator. His leadership qualities were widely recognized, leading to his election as prior general of the Augustinian Order from 2001 to 2013.

In 2015, he was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru, and by 2023, he was called back to Rome to serve in the Vatican as the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, playing a pivotal role in appointing bishops across the world.

A Historic Election

After the passing of Pope Francis in April 2025, the College of Cardinals gathered for a conclave. On May 8, 2025, they elected Cardinal Prevost as the 267th pope. He chose the name Leo XIV, in honor of Pope Leo XIII, a figure known for his work on social teachings and justice during the industrial age.

His election was announced to the world from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where he offered his first public greeting with the words, “Peace be with you.” The announcement was met with widespread celebration, especially in his hometown of Chicago, where residents lauded his rise as a testament to his humility and service.

A Vision for the Future

Pope Leo XIV was officially inaugurated on May 18, 2025, in a mass attended by over 200,000 people, including prominent world leaders. During the ceremony, he received the symbols of papal authority and spoke passionately about his mission to unify and heal divisions within the Church and the broader world.

His inaugural homily focused on compassion, dignity, and justice. He called for an end to violence, hatred, and exploitation, urging Catholics and global citizens alike to work together toward peace and inclusion.

American Roots, Global Reach

Known affectionately as “Father Bob” in his earlier years, Pope Leo XIV remains grounded in his roots. His longtime love for the Chicago White Sox is well known, and the team even sent him a personalized jersey upon his election.

As he begins his papacy, Pope Leo XIV is expected to continue advocating for marginalized communities, global unity, and the spiritual renewal of the Church. His unique blend of Midwestern values and international experience promises a fresh, empathetic approach to the papacy—one that resonates across cultures and continents.
