Queens, as part of an effort to expand access to green spaces in underserved neighborhoods. The 25-acre park, set along the East River, will include walking trails, picnic areas, sports fields, and a dedicated space for community events.
“This park will transform Astoria’s waterfront and provide much-needed recreation space for local families,” said Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue at the groundbreaking ceremony. The park’s design incorporates flood-resilient features, including raised pathways and native plants to prevent erosion.
The project is being funded by a mix of city, state, and federal grants, with construction expected to be completed by 2027. Community members praised the plan, noting that it will improve quality of life and provide a vital connection to nature in a densely populated area.
The new waterfront park is part of NYC’s broader commitment to equitable urban planning, ensuring that all residents have access to high-quality public spaces. Officials hope the park will become a model for sustainable development and community engagement.
