Eric Dane, the acclaimed actor noted for his performances in “Euphoria” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” has been reported to be living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In an exclusive interview with People, Dane stated he feels grateful to continue working while asking for privacy for his family during this challenging time.
“I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” Dane shared.
Understanding ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS, is a debilitating neurodegenerative condition that progressively affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This information is sourced from the ALS Association.
Individuals diagnosed with ALS frequently face severe declines in their ability to walk, speak, and breathe, with most patients succumbing to the disease within three to five years of diagnosis.
Who is Affected by ALS?
According to the ALS Association, someone is diagnosed with ALS or dies from the disease every 90 minutes. Although it typically manifests between the ages of 40 and 70, younger individuals in their 20s and 30s can also develop the condition. Notably, men are 20% more likely to be diagnosed with ALS, although the risk levels equalize as people age.
Moreover, veterans have a heightened risk of developing ALS, though the reasons remain unclear.
Figures showing the prevalence of the disease highlight that ALS affects various demographics and professions, with notable public figures such as Stephen Hawking and Stephen Hillenburg having battled the disease.
The Legacy of Lou Gehrig
The term “Lou Gehrig’s disease” derives from the famous baseball player diagnosed with ALS in the 1940s. Gehrig, a notable figure for the New York Yankees, inspired greater awareness of the disease after his diagnosis. To commemorate his legacy, the Yankees established “Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day” on July 4, 1939.
The Impact of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
In 2014, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge gained international attention as one of the most successful viral fundraising campaigns, significantly boosting donations for ALS research. Thousands of individuals, including celebrities like Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey, participated in the challenge, which involved pouring ice water over themselves or contributing to ALS research.
