New York City, November 15, 2024 – A major step toward addressing New York City’s housing crisis began today as Mayor Eric Adams and community leaders broke ground on a $350 million affordable housing development in Harlem. The ambitious project aims to provide 500 new housing units along with a community center and a rooftop garden, serving as a cornerstone for Harlem’s future while honoring its rich history.

“This is about preserving Harlem’s legacy while investing in its future,” Mayor Adams said during the groundbreaking ceremony. “We are taking action to ensure that Harlem remains a vibrant, inclusive neighborhood where families of all incomes can thrive.”

Set to be completed in 2026, the development will reserve half of its units for families earning below 60% of the area median income, ensuring that low-income households have access to safe, high-quality housing. The remaining units will be available at a mix of income levels, creating an inclusive community that reflects Harlem’s diverse population.

The project, located in the heart of Harlem, is designed to provide more than just housing. Plans include a state-of-the-art community center offering programs for youth and seniors, as well as a rooftop garden aimed at promoting green living and community engagement. These amenities are part of a broader effort to enhance quality of life for residents and foster a sense of connection among neighbors.

Community leaders hailed the project as a long-awaited victory for Harlem residents. “This is a win for our community,” said Denise Roberts, a local housing advocate. “Affordable housing is desperately needed, and this development will help keep families in Harlem while providing essential resources for our neighborhood.”

The project also prioritizes sustainability, with plans to incorporate energy-efficient systems and environmentally friendly building materials. These efforts align with the city’s broader goals of reducing its carbon footprint and building more resilient communities.

As New York City continues to grapple with a housing affordability crisis, the Harlem development represents a significant step toward addressing the issue. By combining affordable housing with community-focused amenities, the project underscores the city’s commitment to providing equitable opportunities for all residents.

For Harlem, a neighborhood with deep cultural and historical roots, the new housing development is a testament to the area’s enduring spirit and its bright future. “This is more than a building,” Adams said. “It’s a promise to the people of Harlem—a promise of opportunity, stability, and growth.”
