Katy Perry Departs ‘American Idol’ After Seven Seasons to Reignite Music Career

by NY Review Contributor

Pop superstar Katy Perry bid an emotional farewell to “American Idol” during the Season 22 finale on May 19, 2024, concluding a seven-year tenure as a judge on the iconic singing competition. Perry’s departure marks the end of a vibrant era characterized by her dynamic presence and candid critiques, which significantly contributed to the show’s continued success.

Perry joined the “American Idol” judging panel in 2018, alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, forming a trio that revitalized the show’s format and appeal. Throughout her time on the show, Perry was known for her colorful fashion choices, sharp wit, and heartfelt support for contestants, often drawing from her own experiences in the music industry to mentor aspiring artists.

The decision to leave “American Idol” was announced by Perry during a February 2024 appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” She expressed a desire to return to her musical roots, stating, “I love ‘Idol’ so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.” This move signaled her intention to focus on creating new music and exploring fresh artistic endeavors.

The Season 22 finale was a poignant event, not only crowning Abi Carter as the winner but also serving as Perry’s final episode. Perry performed “What Makes a Woman” with finalist Jack Blocker, delivering a powerful rendition that highlighted her commitment to female empowerment. Her attire for the evening featured a gown adorned with images of 168 former contestants, symbolizing her lasting impact on the show’s legacy.

Following her departure, Perry released her seventh studio album, “143,” on September 20, 2024. The album, described by Perry as “super high energy” and “full of so much joy,” marked her return to the pop music scene. Despite mixed reviews and controversy surrounding her collaboration with producer Dr. Luke, the album showcased Perry’s dedication to her craft and her willingness to take creative risks.

In support of “143,” Perry embarked on “The Lifetimes Tour” in April 2025, her first concert tour in seven years. The tour featured elaborate stage designs and storytelling elements, reflecting Perry’s theatrical style and commitment to providing fans with an immersive experience.

Perry’s departure from “American Idol” also paved the way for new talent on the judging panel. In August 2024, it was announced that Carrie Underwood, the Season 4 winner of “American Idol,” would join the show as a judge for Season 23. Underwood’s firsthand experience as a contestant and subsequent success in the music industry positioned her as a valuable mentor for aspiring artists.

Reflecting on her time with “American Idol,” Perry expressed gratitude for the relationships she built and the opportunity to mentor emerging talent. Her departure signifies a new chapter in her career, one that embraces her passion for music and her desire to connect with audiences through her artistry.

As Perry continues to evolve as an artist, her contributions to “American Idol” remain a testament to her influence in the music industry and her commitment to nurturing the next generation of performers.
