Metropolitan Museum Launches Thanksgiving Food Drive with City Harvest
New York City, November 14, 2024 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art teamed up with City Harvest to launch a citywide Thanksgiving food drive, blending the spirit of giving with the love of art. Visitors to the museum were encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to donate, with those contributing receiving discounted admission to the world-renowned institution.
The initiative aims to provide 1 million meals to families in need by Thanksgiving, offering vital support to those experiencing food insecurity during the holiday season. “Art and compassion go hand in hand,” said Max Hollein, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “By hosting this food drive, we’re using the power of community and culture to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”
The food drive kickoff at the Met marks the beginning of a broader effort, with similar drives being organized at cultural institutions across the city. These include museums, libraries, and community centers, all uniting to address hunger during the holidays.
Visitors to the Met were eager to participate, bringing bags filled with canned goods, pasta, rice, and other staples to contribute to the cause. “It feels great to give back while enjoying a day at one of my favorite places,” said Lauren Carter, a Queens resident who donated several items while visiting the museum. “It’s such a simple way to make a difference.”
City Harvest, New York City’s largest food rescue organization, expressed gratitude for the support from the Met and other institutions. “The holidays can be a particularly difficult time for families facing food insecurity,” said Karen Goldstein, a spokesperson for City Harvest. “Partnerships like this help us meet the growing need and ensure that no one goes hungry this Thanksgiving.”
The museum’s staff and volunteers have also embraced the effort, organizing donation stations at multiple entry points and encouraging visitors to spread the word. The initiative has drawn praise for combining cultural engagement with philanthropy, inspiring attendees to take action while enjoying the Met’s exhibitions.
As the food drive continues, New Yorkers are reminded of the importance of helping those in need during the season of gratitude. By uniting art, compassion, and community, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s partnership with City Harvest is poised to make a significant impact, providing comfort and hope to countless families this Thanksgiving.
