NYPL Launches “NYPL Connects” to Bridge Digital Divide with Free Tech Classes

The New York Public Library (NYPL) unveiled a groundbreaking initiative today to improve digital literacy across the city, offering free classes on technology skills and internet navigation. The program, titled NYPL Connects, aims to bridge the digital divide for underserved communities.

Classes will be held in 92 library branches citywide and cover topics such as basic computer use, online job applications, and cybersecurity. The program also includes one-on-one tutoring and access to laptops for participants who lack home devices.

“The ability to navigate the digital world is essential in today’s society,” said Tony Marx, president of the NYPL. “This program ensures that every New Yorker has the tools they need to thrive in a technology-driven economy.”

Advocates praised the initiative as a step toward equity, particularly for seniors, immigrants, and low-income families. “Many people have been left behind in the digital age,” said Marissa Cohen, a digital inclusion expert. “Programs like this can make a real difference.”

Enrollment for the classes opens today, with the first sessions starting next week. The NYPL hopes to expand the program in the coming months, depending on demand and funding.
