New York City, November 18, 2024 – In a significant move to support the growing number of cyclists commuting year-round, the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) announced the completion of 25 miles of new protected bike lanes across the city. This expansion is part of a broader effort to make cycling a viable and safe transportation option, even during the colder months.

“Cycling isn’t just for summer,” said Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “These new bike lanes, combined with our snow-removal plans, ensure that New Yorkers who choose to cycle during the winter have safe and reliable infrastructure.”

The new lanes are strategically placed to connect key commuting routes across all five boroughs, linking neighborhoods to transit hubs and commercial districts. The initiative includes improved signage, additional lighting, and protective barriers to enhance cyclist safety. To address winter conditions, the DOT has also unveiled a snow-removal strategy specifically for bike lanes, ensuring they remain accessible and clear even during heavy snowfall.

Cycling advocacy groups welcomed the expansion and applauded the city’s commitment to year-round cycling infrastructure. “This is a big step forward for sustainable transportation in New York,” said Sarah Goldstein, director of BikeNYC. “These protected lanes make cycling safer and more practical for commuters, even during winter. However, we urge the city to increase enforcement against vehicles obstructing bike lanes to fully realize their benefits.”

The expansion aligns with the city’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries. With more New Yorkers embracing cycling as an eco-friendly and cost-effective mode of transportation, the demand for protected bike lanes has grown significantly. According to DOT data, winter cycling has increased by 35% over the past three years.

For daily cyclists like Harlem resident Marcus Torres, the new lanes are a welcome addition. “I bike to work every day, rain or shine, and having safe, protected lanes makes a huge difference,” he said. “Knowing the city will keep them clear in the winter is a game-changer.”

While the new bike lanes are a significant improvement, advocacy groups and residents emphasize the need for ongoing investment in cyclist safety, including better enforcement against illegal parking in bike lanes and continued infrastructure upgrades.

As the city continues to expand its cycling network, the completion of these new bike lanes demonstrates New York’s commitment to fostering sustainable and safe transportation options for all seasons.
